Why You Should Visit Jewel Cave

By admin | July 23, 2008

South Dakota is rife with natural beauty.  From the incredible stark grandeur of the Badlands to the beauty of the Black Hills National Forest and the incredible engineering of Mount Rushmore, natural beauty is the rule.  However, Jewel Cave National Monument is one of the best attractions in the state. Visitors will find the second longest cave system in the world, at 141 feet and some change, it comes in just shy of Mammoth Cave in Kentucky.

Why visit Jewel Cave National Monument?  This is the most diverse cave system in the world, featuring amazing box formations, incredible calcite jewels that resemble pink flowers, an amazing variety of stalactites and stalagmites, and much more, as well.  A guided tour through the cave takes a couple of hours, depending on the tour selected and offers incredible enjoyment.  All tours are led by park rangers and require only 2 people for the tour to take place.

In addition to the exploratory opportunities, visitors can enjoy amazing hiking above ground. Wildflower viewing and "birding" are two of the most popular activities in the area.  The sheer diversity and number of the stunning wildflowers is reason alone to visit, while the amazing birds in the area offer even greater beauty for those seeking enjoyment outdoors.
