The financial experts on tv point to many indicators to get a feel how the economy is doing. One indicator they could use is the sales of personalised number plates as they are very much a luxury item and can be a good clue to how much excess cash is slopping around in the economy. Sales of new cars are sometimes driven by neccessity as people have to replace their modes of transport as they wear out or become unreliable but no one actually needs a personalised registration number, they are only bought with cash that is surplus to that needed for living.
