In what way to 3D Glasses Work?

Nature provides most human beings with two eyes that form an absolutely amazing binocular vision system. To be used with objects up to around 20 feet.  6 thru 7 meters away, the binocular vision system lets us easily tell with good accuracy how far away an object is. For example, if there are multiple objects in our field of view, we can automatically tell which ones are farther and which are nearer, and how far away they are. Distance can stil be perceived with one eye, however the accuracy of the measurement of that distance decreases.  As such you will have to compensate by depending on visual cues or focusing on distances which are slower.

To see how much of a difference the binocular vision system makes, have a friend throw you a ball and try to catch it while keeping one eye closed. You may also notice a difference at night of in a room that is fairly dark. It is much harder to catch a ball with one eye open than with two eyes open.

The binocular system of vision depends on the fact that our pair of eyes are located approximately two inches Separated. Five centimeters. apart. The binocular vision system works since the brain is able to utilize the different perspective obtained from each eye and process them together to calculate distance. Images are correlated in your brain even though your eyes present two slightly different images. The correlator works by calculating the distances between objects in two scenes by examining the images. Objects that are farther apart in the two images are closer than objects that are not so far separately.

View-Master and stereoscopic viewers are examples of binocular vision systems. The View-Master presents a slightly different picture to each eye; the pictures are taken at slightly different angles by two separate cameras. You eyes will actually correlate these images even though each eye sees only one of the images.
