Will debt consolidation hurt my credit?

I am trying to figure out the best way to get rid of all the debt that I owe right now. I was thinking that debt consolidation might be able to help me since it might get me a lower interest rate for some of the higher interest debt, which would mean I would be able to pay it off a bit sooner. However, I am wondering whether or not doing something like this might hurt my credit rating. I want to keep my credit rating as high as possible since I am trying to get into a position where I can buy a house.
