Advertising Started As a Fluke

By admin | July 17, 2009

My son is studying advertising in his language class. According to his book, the first formal ad was created when there was a mix up in a batch of soap. A worker had forgotten to turn off the machine and it had over mixed and become full of air. Taking advantage of the situation, the company owner decided to market his air filled, floating soap and tout it special, pure properties. Of course, it was just soap…with air in it, but it became a household name thanks to the ads. Today there’s ads for everything, from cereal, to abs rocket, to baby items. If it’s not branded, it’s not the best and companies take advantage of that consumer mindset. It’s amazing how what started out as a simple mistake has turned into a multimillion dollar industry.
