Passing gas can help to lower blood pressure naturally

By admin | November 30, 2008

Farting can help you to lower blood pressure naturally. This may seem hard to believe but it is not a joke! And it gets even more ridiculous; it’s not actually passing gas that does it (although this does relieve pressure of a different sort!) it’s the smell that does it!

More precisely, the component in abdominal gas that makes it stink, hydrogen sulphide, helps to regulate blood pressure. Scientists at John Hopkins University made mice deficient in hydrogen sulphide and their blood pressure shot up by 20%.

Hydrogen sulphide is a gas produced by an enzyme in blood vessels (and also by food being digested in the intestines) and the gas produces relaxation and lower blood pressure (but only for the farter, not the fartee). The researchers are now attempting to design drugs based on this compound. This seems misguided; beans and eggs are much cheaper.
