Change - through war or peace?

What is the best way to effect change? Is imposing your views on others via violent means such as war more effective in changing the way the world works? Or is it more effective to create a new earth through peaceful means, such as education, that change the views of one person at a time? War and violence may change the policies of whole countries at a time, but is this a lasting change? Or will there just be another war to try to get things changed back the way they started? I think violence may change the world more quickly, but nonviolent methods such as education may make a more lasting change.
