Tail or Fin Rot in Betta fish
By admin | September 11, 2008
Symptoms: In this disease, the Betta’s fins and tail literally rot and seem to get shorter. They seem to be dissolving or falling apart. There are not many behavioral changes, which accompany this disease as the Betta may continue to be active and eat normally. A noticeable change in the tail and fins are that the edges of the Betta appear to be shade darker and the fins appear clumped together.
Cause: The main cause of this disease is dirty or unhygienic water with possible increase in microbial contamination due to fungi or bacteria.
Treatment: A complete water change is recommended accompanied by cleansing of the tank apparatus. Medication for the Sick Betta Fish in the form of tetracycline and a good anti-fungal should be added to the water. If the rot is only mild, the use of maracyn 1 and maracyn 2 is recommended. The water must be changed with fresh doses of medication every third day until there is either restoration or at least no further damage to the fins and tail of the fish. It is known that the Betta’s fins and tail do grow back after this disease, however, with either loss of color or length.
