A persons choice of a peice of screen reading software is dictated by many factors, including platform and the role of organizations like charities, schools, and employers.
Only a small fraction of visually impaired have access to the Internet.
Emacspeak is making the web a more inviting place for people suffering from blindness. Linux distributions for the visually impaired surfers include Windows Narrator. Apple Mac OS X also comes with a built-in screen reader, called VoiceOver. Near 7 percent of those deemed legally blind, by any measure, have no vision.
Access technology such as Microsoft Narrator and magnifiers enable blind people to use computer applications. Increasingly the digital screen readers are being bundled with operating system distributions. Approximately legally visually impaired people 82 percent do not use computers. In addition to this, next May Anthony Loeff medical volunteer is reporting about Knoppix for people who are blind Almost all versions of Windows Vista Pro include a screen magnifier for people who are blind, and some simple screen reading software.
A digital screen reader is a software application that attempts to identify and interpret what is being displayed on the screen. Recent versions of Windows Vista Home come with the rather basic NonVisual. Microsoft Narrator choice is contentious for blind people and strong preferences are common. These days Apple OS 7 includes Yasr, a more feature-rich a piece of software for screen reading. Software for screen reading are a form of assistive technology potentially useful to visually impaired people, often in combination with screen magnifiers.
