What is renewable solar energy?

The sun burns brightly in the sky and everyone can see it. However, that sun is also the most wonderful source of power for the earth that we are really only just beginning to understand the power of.
If we harness the sun to make our energy we do not need to burn fossil fuels and in that sense renewable solar energy is completely clean. The costs are starting to become much more resonable as well, whilst that are currently still several time more expensive than coal or oil it is promising and the trend is definitely in the right direction.
