Charleston’s Old Slave Mart Museum

By admin | August 6, 2008

Great food, cobblestone streets, and beautiful architecture are just a few of the reasons that people love visiting Charleston. However, whenever you look to the past you can find a sordid side. In Charleston, the Old Slave Mart Museum located on 6 Chalmers Street represents this dark side. It was here that, many years ago, African Americans were bought and sold on the auction block. In fact, the building that houses the Old Slave Mart is the only one of its kind still standing in the United States, and as such, it has significant historical value. In 1938, Miriam B. Wilson bought the building and turned it into a museum dedicated to the history of Africans in America, which has grown and become the place that exists today. Visitors can learn about the ins and outs of the slave trade, including how the slaves were brought to America, and how the auction block at the Old Slave Mart worked. The museum houses many artifacts, letters, and documents from slaves, buyers, and traders. You can also see how slavery impacted the United States in a variety of ways. Few other places can give you as real a sense of how life was back then.
