Where to Begin When Learning to Become a Professional Yachtsman

If you feel the pull of the tides in your blood, and wish to make your living out on the open waters, then becoming a professional yachtsman may be a great career choice. You will begin by investigating available sailing courses. You will find that Rya courses are designed by the Royal Yachting Association, which is the governing body of sailing in the United Kingdom. Because both charter companies and governments seeking trained sailors look to those who have taken Rya courses, you will want to consider Rya courses as you train to be a professional yachtsman.
Before receiving your day skipper certification, which is the basic certification showing your competence to sail a craft under most situations, you will need to take sailing courses to cover the prerequisites. The competent crew course is the first of the sailing courses, and teaches you the basics of helmsmanship, boat handling, and sail handling.
After completing the competent crew course, and logging a number of hours of sailing time during the day and night, you will be able to advance to sailing courses for your day skipper certification. If your goal is to become a professional yachtsman, you will want to make sure that you take a tidal day skipper certification, rather than a non-tidal day skipper certification, because you most certainly will be sailing in tidal waters during your professional sailing career.
